Excel keyboard shortcuts

Navigation, selection, quick date entry and the famous F4 to lock a reference: the Excel shortcuts that actually speed up data entry.

Navigation

Shortcut Action
Ctrl + Arrows Jump to the edge of the data range
Ctrl + Home / End Go to A1 / last used cell
Ctrl + Page Up/Down Previous / next sheet
F5 Go to a cell (e.g. B12)

Selection

Shortcut Action
Ctrl + Space Select the column
Shift + Space Select the row
Ctrl + Shift + Arrow Extend the selection to the edge
Ctrl + A Select the whole table

Editing

Shortcut Action
F2 Edit the cell
Ctrl + ; Insert today's date
Ctrl + Shift + ; Insert the current time
Alt + Enter Line break inside a cell
Ctrl + D / R Fill down / fill right

Formatting

Shortcut Action
Ctrl + 1 Open Format Cells
Ctrl + Shift + % Percentage format
Alt + = AutoSum

F4 right after typing a reference (e.g. A1) cycles through A1$A$1A$1$A1 — no need to type the $ signs by hand to lock a reference.

Rows, columns and sheets

Shortcut Action
Ctrl + + / - Insert / delete the selected rows or columns
Ctrl + 9 / 0 Hide the selected rows / columns
Alt + Shift + Group the selected rows/columns
Shift + F11 Insert a new sheet
Ctrl + double-click the column border Auto-fit the column width

Freezing panes

Shortcut Action
View → Freeze Panes → Freeze Top Row Keep the header visible while scrolling
View → Freeze Panes → Freeze First Column Keep column A visible while scrolling

Select the cell just below and to the right of what you want frozen, then View → Freeze Panes → Freeze Panes: freezes rows AND columns at once.
