Before you leave

Need App category Do it before departure
Maps Offline maps (Maps.me, Google Maps) Download the area over Wi-Fi
Translation Text, photo and voice translation Download the offline language pack
Local transit The city/country's own app (metro, bus, local ride-hailing) Create an account before departure if needed
Currency Currency converter Check the real exchange rate before negotiating
Documents Cloud storage or photos of your papers Back up passport, tickets, bookings

Always keep an offline copy (photo or PDF) of your essential documents: internet access isn't guaranteed everywhere.

Connectivity

  • Local or international eSIM: often simpler than a physical SIM card, activatable before departure.
  • Airplane mode + Wi-Fi: to avoid mobile data roaming outside your plan.
  • VPN: useful on public hotel/airport Wi-Fi, or to reach services blocked locally.

Safety and emergencies

  • Save local emergency numbers (see the dedicated sheet) and your embassy/consulate address.
  • Share your itinerary with someone via a location-sharing app, especially for solo trips or remote areas.
